MAW Productions’ editor had a chance to sit down with writer and artist Jason Negen who is responsible for scripting “Crucible” in the saga of Jetta: Tales of the Toshiwgawa.

Tell a little about yourself and where you come from.
The truth is, I come from a frozen northern wasteland so bitterly frigid that at the wrong time of the year it will freeze the blood solid within your very veins. It’s a land known as “Minnesota”, and I would not recommend the feint of heart ever venture there.
All kidding aside, Minnesota’s a great place. But yeah, it’s too freakin’ cold for me. I came here to live with my mother (long story) as a teenager and have never looked back.
What are all your interests? (Writing, art, any sports or other hobbies)
I’m a pretty big fan of creativity in general. I really love writing stories and songs, and have even dabbled in poetry (don’t laugh). I love drawing, I love playing guitar. I enjoy playing sports casually, but I don’t really watch much.
What got you interested in comics?
To tell you the truth, I can’t think of a time I haven’t had an interest in comics. As early as I can remember I was in to Spiderman, Superman and especially the Hulk. I was such a Hulk fan that in the first grade, my mother shredded an old pair of jeans along the sides for me and I would run around the house shirtless, just the jeans on, Hulking out on people, probably annoying the crap out of them. We had an old green truck at the time, the paint was so old it was coming off, and I was so Hulk crazy I even rubbed that green paint all over me once. That all finally ended when I had a nightmare that the Hulk came after me and kicked my ass. Suddenly, the Hulk wasn’t much fun anymore, so I moved on to Star Wars. I always had a toy blaster and a flashlight clipped to my belt everywhere I went from then on.
Another amusing story is when I was still in Kindergarten, maybe earlier, I would draw my favorite super heroes on paper and cut them out and play with them like toy figures. My parents loved it, saved them having to buy me real toys. Eventually I decided to make secondaries of all the characters though, only without their costumes on. And by “without their costumes on” I mean buck nekid. When my parents saw that they were not as thrilled, and it was time to have a little talk.
The sad fact is, this is just the tip of the ice burg when it comes to embarrassing stories of my early comics love. I could go on and on.

Tell about some of your prior projects.
I was the artist for Pride’s Fall from One Shot Productions. I’m not especially proud of how I did on it, but it was a start. I feel I’m a much better artist now. Any ways, I’ve also done a silly little comic strip style mock interview thing that appeared in the Midsouth Cartoonists Anthology 2. It wasn’t good, but it was fun. Other than that, I was the co-writer on Jetta: Crucible, and I was writer on the Jetta web comic “Simple Lessons”.
Tell about your projects now.
My major upcoming project is called “Aura”. The plan is for it to be an ongoing series, or perhaps a series of miniseries similar to Hellboy. It’s the story of Rhian Turner, a girl who has been born as sort of a natural conduit for magic. As a result, she is chosen as the champion to bring magic back into the world. I’m the writer on all of the issues, and for the foreseeable future
I’ll be trading off on art duties with Curtis Rhodes, who’s a fantastic artist. We have a ton of Aura work done, so I can say there’s a lot of material coming along soon.
Aside from that, I have a few other one-shots I’m working on, both as writer and artist and as writer with other artists. I like to wait until things are looking really good and far enough along before I announce them. But I will say I have a LOT of scripts out there, waiting for artists to finish them up. Anyone interested can checkout my site, Dreamscape9productions.com, for updates.

Antone and I had both done some work for One Shot Productions, and I really admired what he was doing with Jetta, it seemed really cool. As well, I was really interested in getting some writing projects, anything, as long as it was good. So I came up with some ideas, Antone suggested I write an 8-page web comic. I knocked it out in one night, handed it back to him the next day. He liked it, he gave it to Stanley Weaver to draw, and Stanley just did a killer job. Antone and Janet inked it, and it seemed the finished product was pretty well received. That was the story called “Simple Lessons”.
Somewhere along the line, I wrote a full sized issue and proposed it to Antone. He liked the pitch, so I wrote a full script. Along the way, he and Janet edited and expanded the story to fit their vision. That was Jetta: Crucible.
I’ve written two other scripts for Jetta web comics, one called “Rearview Mirrors”, the other called “Encounters”. I’ve seen early pencils for Encounters, and they look great. I have no idea when they may be posted though, so those are still in the “forthcoming” category. Maybe.
Where do you find your inspiration while writing for Jetta stories?
I think with writing any story, the trick is to find a good, compelling “voice” for the characters, and think of a good plot to motivate those characters. For Jetta, I really found the voice I wanted for her once I came up with the idea of Taki Sato for her to play against. Once I got rolling with that character conflict, the hard part was to stop writing.
Other than Jetta, who is your favorite character and why?
Taki Sato, simply because I had a hand in her creation. The concept of the character was mine, I gave Antone a description of what I envisioned, and he nailed it in spades the very first time. I just love his design for her. Plus, at least in my mind, she’s completely nuts, so that’s always fun to write. I look forward to seeing what Antone does with her in the future.
What do you think about creating a character that fits so well into the epic Jetta stories?
It’s always nice to hear that someone likes my writing. It also makes me want to do better and try harder. Also, I look forward to seeing how that character develops in the future.
THE KEVIN QUESTIONS:
Paper or plastic?
I should say paper, but plastic. Just too convenient.
How do you like your eggs cooked?
Are you hitting on me?
Where do you squeeze your toothpaste tube?
All over baby!
Toilet paper: roll over or under?
What, are you insane? Over, it’s always over.
Favorite color?
I like all the colors. Except teal. I just don’t like the sound of it.
If you had a girl’s name, what would it be?
This is an obviously loaded question, and I resent being asked it. I can tell what you’re up to.
