Free Comic Book Day 2012

Free Comic Book Day is May 5th 2012 and we will be celebrating it in two different locations at the same time. (Crazy I know.)

First off Janet Saltygirl Stone Wade and myself along with Shawn Pryor of Action Lab Entertainment will be signing books, sketching, and meeting readers at Collectibles Etc in Lexington Ky! Janet and I will have copies of our new book, Jetta vs Turra that we will be giving away FOR FREE to everyone that stops by our table. If you will be in the area, make sure you stop by, grab a book and sketch and enjoy the festivities.

Back in Memphis, TN Kevin L. Williams, Muley and Turra will be signing copies of Muley the Mule and Friends, Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa and Turra: Gun Angel at The Comics Cellar along side members of the Mid South Cartoonists Association! If you are in the Memphis area, take a trip to The Cellar and find out more information on the MSCA, grab a book from the editor of MAW Productions and have Turra sign your books!!

Also, don’t forget to download your FREE 200 plus page digital comic from Action Lab Entertainment, called Action Lab Confidential from digital comic providers such as Graphicly, Comics+, Drive Thru Comics and additional digital outlets.

Action Lab Entertainment, best known for the indie smash-hit comic book Princeless and the soon to be released Double Jumpers wants to give readers the opportunity to read extended previews of their entire catalog of comics and original graphic novels, including some titles that have yet to hit the shelves.

This means you can download a copy and get a free sneak extended preview of Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa – Beginnings!!

“Beginnings” collects Jetta – Last Chances (first published in 2003) and Jetta – Crucible (first published in 2009)into one 120 page full color graphic novel.

With all new story additions, art and ending commentary, Beginnings brings an entirely new reading experience to these exciting books and provides an excellent jumping on point for new readers who have always wanted to check out one of the most popular female characters in independent comics.

We will be all over the place this Free Comic Book Day!! Happy reading and we’ll see you guys somewhere out there.

Anime Blues Con 2012

Maw Productions will, once again, be setting up at Anime Blues Con! This year, the convention is going to be loaded with artistic goodness. From the packed artist alley to the artist guests, ABC looks to be the place where you can find that art piece you need or that vital piece of information that will make your art fly. Here is a rundown of the featured artists.

They are continuing to make strides in the motion picture and animation industry as well and is continuing to bring new ideas to readers with their newest graphic novel, Turra: Bombs and Betrayal, the family friendly antics of Muley the Mule and Friends, and numerous original art, prints, sketch books, jewelry and merchandise.

Shawn Pryor

President Action Lab Entertainment

The founder & publisher of PKD Media; Shawn was inspired to dive head-in to the world of comic books & media entertainment by writing his first series, the buddy-cop comedy “Mercury & The Murd” in 2008. That led him to create/write several additional titles for PKD Media as time went along. Currently, Shawn is co-writing the sci-fi title “Exo-1 & The Rock Solid Steelbots” for the Action Lab Signature Series line, and writing the all-ages action title “Agents of C.O.L.T.: Satellite of Ice.”

As President of Action Lab Entertainment, Shawn tries to put the emphasis of putting fun back into the comic book and animation medium and in his spare time ponders if he’s related to the late-great comedian with whom he shares the same last name.

Martheus tours schools with Geek 101 seminars

Something that you may not know about me is that I am big into education. It is the one thing that makes the difference between the poor and the well to do. It is also the one thing that no person can take away from you once you have it. As an independent publisher and illustrator, the one thing that I can give back to young artist coming up are my experiences and knowledge that I have acquired (through trial and error). Hopefully younger artists will be able to avoid the pot holes that I hit and make their way to bigger and better heights. That’s what artistic community is all about. It’s how we keep moving forward.

This summer I will be traveling to different schools around Tennessee speaking about my career in comics, how I got started in art, and how students can better themselves in their artistic endeavors. Here are some shots from our first school tour in Nashville. We went to two schools that day and spoke to over 150 students about the importance of “the process” in art. Here are some shots from Rock Springs Middle School!

Speaking about the "Process of Comic Book Illustration".

Explaining thumb nails and selection.

Illustrating Batman! I gave this away to one of the kids in the crowd!

Every kid got a free Justice League print that I signed for each of them!

Thanks to Rock Springs Middle for the great photos. As well, thanks to Joe Thordarson for allowing me to take part in the tours. Our next tour is coming up in March and I’m looking forward to meeting the new faces of comics and entertainment!

The mission of RiverArtsFest is to expand and enhance the reputation of Memphis as an arts-oriented community. Traditionally, this event has attracted a sophisticated buying public to interact with talented, nationally recognized artists from across the nation.

Artists from many disciplines come to RiverArtsFest to participate in our demonstrating artist programs during our 2 day event. We call this part of our event Artists in Motion, during which, visitors can get close, observe, ask questions and gain an understanding of the artistic mind and the extraordinary dedication required to produce a work of art.

Artists are chosen on merit, entry is by invitation only. Artists are given space to work; free from commercial pressure they can relax, enjoy working, and meeting visitors.

All artwork is generally available for sale, often directly from the artist.  Come by and check out the action at St. Paul and South Main.
