Turra and Cyan in Kunoichi Hime© issue 2

There has been a great deal of things happening that I have to fill you guys in on. First off, sorry for the long delay between updates. Life can get away with you sometimes and this is one of those times for me. The good news is that I haven’t been just sitting around. I’ve been working on some cool stuff!! So, here is a quick update to let you guys know where I am on all of the different projects that are currently in production.

Janet, Martheus and Marvin at ABC Remix

Kunoichi Hime is looking REALLY GOOD. Our preview book that we have taken to conventions has had a great response. There are A LOT of people looking forward to this book coming out. The first issue is in the can! The second issue is in deep production. Tressa Bowling (LOI Studios and co-host of the podcast Beaucoup Pop) has completed her cover for issue 2 and its awesome. I’ll preview it as soon as production on it has completed! I’m still in talks with Action Lab Entertainment to get a formal date for the Kunoichi Hime Release. Once I get that, I’ll let everyone know when this book will hit the shelves! Be on the look out!

Kristen meditates on page 4 of Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa - Omega

Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa – Omega is also looking awesome! I’m really proud of the work that is going into this book as we close this main Jetta story arch. I’ve been working on the Jetta stories my entire comic book career and this is a VERY bittersweet book for me. So, I’m trying to give you guys the best that I can to thank you for sticking with me and Jetta all these years. I am on the last chapter of pencils! Be on the look out for pre-order announcements when we get closer to release!

Turra© is Realdy to Roll!

August 3 and 4 will see Turra: Gun Angel come to life in our live action short. Since our Indiegogo Campaign to raise funds for the short was successful, this has been the big thing that has kept me away from other projects. This is MASSIVE. If you have donated and joined Team Turra, your incentives will be shipped to you as soon as the edits are complete and we have a final copy of the short. I’m so excited to be on the set again working with Marshal Pictures and Rachel Alig to bring this story to life. Find out more info on the movie and the Turra© character at turragunangel.com!

Alright peeps! There is more to do and so little time. I’m going to put on the artist cap again and hit the drawing board. I’ll see you all in the comic books.

Turra: Gun Angel is a GO!

TURRA: GUN ANGEL IS A GO!

There is so much to update you guys on. For the last 45 days, Marshal Pictures and I have been heading up an Indiegogo Campaign to bring our favorite white clad ninja to live on the screen. We were successful! And even raised an extra $3,000. The first scene of Turra: Gun Angel will start filming this summer.

Check out the campaign and the first teaser trailer!

As part of the incentives, donors will get a 12 page comic of the opening scene as well with artwork provided by me. Here are a few preview pages from the book.

Martheus Wade and Director Greg Gray also sat down and answered questions about the movie live! You can view the recorded broadcast here.

We also kicked this entire campaign off at the Lexington Comic and Toy Con this past April. If you didn’t see us there, here are some shots from that con as well. It’s quickly becoming our favorite convention to set up at. Power Rangers!! Turra!! Comics!! How can you go wrong?

We can’t thank everyone that supported this effort enough! Because of you, our dream of seeing Turra on the big screen is a reality! Please continue to follow this journey at www.turragunangel.com. Also, we will be back to updating here as well with artwork sneak peaks from both Turra: Gun Angel and Jetta: Omega!

And now, we leave you with a word from Turra star Rachel Alig.

It’s Turra’s Time to Shine!!

Rachel Alig is Turra Shibata

Short Summary

Marshal Pictures and MAW Productions are teaming up to bring the comic book character Turra : Gun Angel to a screen near you!

Turra has been raised as a ninja assassin and is burnt out on the endless training and constant killing. She leaves Japan to become a bounty hunter in America.

After the particularly brazen extraction of a target from a night club, Turra is visited by an elder member of the Japanese Mafia who offers her a job she can’t refuse.

Being Turra, however, she does refuse and she soon lands in the middle of Yakuza Civil War!

What We Need & What You Get

Without that particularly brazen extraction of the target – a network hacker employed by  some very bad people –  the proverbial ball of violence cannot get rolling. That opening scene contains the inciting event for the whole enchilada.

That’s where we need you!! Pledge to our indiegogo campaign and help us spread the word!!

To do that opening scene right, it is gonna cost some money. Blank firing guns, squib hits, real flash grenades (well, almost real), the people to make it safe and the insurance to cover it all ain’t cheap!

The good news is, Marshal Pictures owns almost all of the necessary production equipment and works with many talented people in the Mid-South who are willing to work for a greatly reduced day rate – some times as reduced as a grilled cheese sandwich – on a cool project like this.

Therefore, all the money donated (after incentive expenses and indiegogo’s cut) will go straight to buying the fun stuff like blank-firing guns and the not-so-fun stuff like insurance. If we have any left over we’ll probably buy some grilled cheese sandwiches.

If, by the gods of Veronica Mars, we get overfunded, we’re going to shoot more of the movie!

So are we all take and no give? Heck no! We have some booty kickin’ incentives to show our appreciation for your generous support. Please have a look!

Other Ways You Can Help

No cheese? No bread? You can still help if you want to. Just tweet, text or otherwise communicate something nice about the production. indiegogo.com even has tools to make that easier.

Literally no cheese and no bread? Then you can’t have any grilled cheese sandwiches!

**Please note: The opening scene takes place in an upscale gentleman’s club. There will not be any nudity, but you still must be 18 or older to participate in the production day and after party. Thank you!

Artist Block 02: Production Update on Kunoichi Hime

Ah yes. The beginning of convention season. I seriously think that it gets earlier and earlier each year. This weekend found me and Janet at our first con of the year, Anime Blues Remix. As promised, I had a sneak preview on sale of our new 6 issue mini series, Kunoichi Hime: Ninja Princess as well as our first art print for the con. The preview book itself was an 8 page preview of the first issue. IN FULL COLOR! It went well with the younger demographic of the con and I was excited with breaking into a new audience. So, I think that is a perfect segue into the subject of my next production blog. This weeks update is on Kunoichi Hime: Ninja Princess.

Coming in 2013 from Action Lab Entertainment!

For starters, for those of you that think this is just another Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa book, think again. Get that outta your head. While the characters are taken from that graphic novel series, this book follows a much younger Shianndrea Toshigawa and a group of young warriors who serve the Toshigawa ninja clan. You don’t have to know the graphic novel continuity to understand who each character is and what is going on. This is it’s own story.

Ok.

So we got that out of our systems.

Breathe.

I’m going to continue in…

3…

2…

1…

So production wise on Kunoichi Hime, where am I?

As you may or may not know, I’m doing another mini series titled Odin Jones as well. I started on Kunoichi Hime about midway of the third issue of Odin Jones. (We’ll be getting back to Odin soon.) Unlike other projects, Kunoichi production is 95.99% me. (I was going to distance myself as much as I possibly could from this project due to personal reasons. But, I’m staying the course despite the naysayers.) Marvin is doing color flats and I am rendering. So, everything takes me much longer. Still, the first 6 issues in the mini series is completely written and I’m finished penciling the first issue. Marvin is currently flatting page 13 as well. We are working folks!! YAAYY!!

I’ve always wanted to do a younger story for these characters. Years ago, I started a comic strip called “The Wolfpack” that told the exploits of a young Shianndrea, Kim, Turra, Cyan, and Tochi. It never saw the light of day tho. When I was talking with some of the producers to the Jetta live action movie (Don’t ask. I don’t know.), they said that interest was high in the property from young girls, teens and women. I knew we had a pretty strong female base. But I never thought the characters would connect with girls as well. That got me to thinking about finishing the “Wolf Pack” stories. But, I didn’t have the finances to publish the story like I wanted while trying to finish out the graphic novel. So, the BRILLIANT idea to do a biweekly web comic came up. Awe yeah! I was jazzed for that! I started to write stories that I just had fun with and not worrying about existing continuity too much. I started promoting it as a web comic that was to start in January 2013.

Remember this?!

So… Where is the Web Comic, dude?!

I didn’t expect it to be picked up by a publisher. I showed my stories to Action Lab Entertainment and Kunoichi Hime was grabbed by them before the web comic started! Even better!! So, here I am working on a 6 issue mini that’s due out at the end of 2013! I’m so excited! BUT, don’t think that I have abandoned the idea of Kunoichi Hime as a web comic. I’ve written over 20 issues in this series. There is a lot of “tween” stories that take place as well as a “second season” past the first 6 issues. I plan on releasing some (if not most) of that online to fill in the release at the end of the year. More goodness coming your way! But, it also means more work.

What’s helping me move forward faster is the illustration/inking process. I’m not inking the entire page this time. I’m only inking the foregrounds and leaving the backgrounds pencil.

“Well, that ain’t right!”, you say.

“It ain’t a comic if you don’t ink the entire thing!”, you say.

Well, I’m going for something a little different here. I’m going for a more animated, almost Capcom video game look, rather than traditional comic book. Some of my favorite books are the Streetfighter books from Udon and Capcom. I love how their color mixes the elements of video game and anime into an almost animated cell comic book look. It’s awesome. In a way, this is my spin on that type of color, while still making it part of what I do. By not inking the backgrounds, it forces the focus on the main character(s) in the foreground. When I start to render the background, color helps set the mood of the piece while fading to the background.

See!! See!!

Another thing that makes this project different is that I’M NOT DOING ANY COVERS!! YAAAY! While I love doing them, covers are HARD! They have to gain the interest of the passerby as well as hit the demographic that you are looking for. For me, I knew from the beginning that I wouldn’t be able to meet the demographic that we are trying for (younger female audience, manga readers, etc.). So, I enlisted help for these. First up is the uber talented Johanna Tamminen

She is the illustrator of the first issue of the book as will be doing issue 6’s cover as well.

Next up is the “Media Popper”, Tressa Bowling. She’s a studio mate of mine and Janet’s at LOI Studios (More to come on that soon.) and contributed to the hit indy book “Princeless” published by Action Lab Entertainment. She will be doing covers for books 3 and 5!

Last but not least is my wife, Janet Wade! She has been working hard on different cover concepts and such for Kunoichi Hime and she is my partner in crime for both MAW Productions and LOI Studios! She also contributed to “Princeless” as well!! She’s got covers to issues 2 and 4.

If you are reading this, you should go check these women’s artwork out. Mucho Talented!!

So, there you have it! My update for the week. Don’t forget to check back in with me for definite release dates on all my projects.

Artist Block 01: Production Update on Jetta: Omega

First, I want to say Happy New Year! I can’t believe its already 2013. Time really does move faster as you get older. If you are reading this, thank you for following us for another year. These Production Updates are meant for you!

So, I finally get the chance to update the site and I honestly don’t know where to begin. I have had to do, deal with and work on so many projects in the past months I felt like I’ve lived in a whirlwind. From alien monsters, to hot babes in a post apocalyptic world, to ninjas, I have been crazy busy with work and life. This production blog will be an ongoing thing where I’ll let everyone know the status of books I’m working on as well as the joys and snags that come up along the way. So… Where should I start?

Alright, let’s start off with the book that has taken me the longest to get out so far, Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa – Omega. I have to apologize to the readers of the graphic novel series. The original plan was to have the book out at the same time as Turra: Bombs and Betrayal was coming out. That would have put a cap on the end of the Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa story arc. Through my own fault, I believed that was also a good time to do submissions to other companies to get mainstream attention. The problem with submissions is that you tend to spend all or most of your time creating new artwork specifically for a particular company that you have little to no chance of ever showing or selling. In short, I did a lot of work that no one has or will see anytime soon. The problem with that is, while I was out doing submissions, Jetta just sat there. Because of that, I’ve been having to rebuild my readership a bit. Which takes more time away from the book I need to finish. It’s all a vicious cycle. Good news now is that I am almost on my last chapter of the book penciling. There are some very emotional stuff in this book for me because it’s my last Jetta graphic novel for a while. That is harder for me to deal with than I can express to anyone even Janet and Kevin. And this last chapter is going to be even harder to complete. But, DAMN! I gotta say, this is the most exciting book I have worked on yet. The last chapter? NOTHING BUT ONE BIG BATTLE!! Wall to wall kicks and punches being thrown and I’m loving it. This book is going to top 100 pages easy. I may have to edit it down a bit. I’m not sure. What do you guys think? I’m working on a number of industry pros to contribute art to this as well. So, I don’t want to cheapen the experience. This is the last book and I want to make it GOOD!

About Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa- Omega
Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa is a graphic novel series that centers on Shianndrea Toshigawa. Code named “Jetta”, she is the chosen one of the Toshigawa ninja clan who is meant to defend the world from the demonic army known as the Knave. The leader of the Knave is the godlike Terminus, Emperor of Japan and the father of Jetta. In order to defeat this demon army, Jetta has been forced to leave her family and friends in order to train for the day she will be forced to face her father in combat. However, she only wants to lead a normal life away from the clan and far from any prophesied destiny. But, she is always forced back into a fight that she does not want; a fight where friends die and her hope for happiness continues to slip away.

I wanted to share some preview art for Jetta: Omega and break down the pages a bit so you will know where my head is when I’m illustrating the book for you guys. (Side note: I really want to thank readers like Nate Blasa and Michael Armstrong. If it wasn’t for you guys being vocal about the books, I’d probably not be able to make it through it. lol)

One of my favorite pages is of Kristen revealing herself to the world as the sexy, powerful dark ninja. There is a turning point for her that happens in this book that is a bit drastic for the character. If you’ve read the books from the first graphic novel (Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa – Last Chances), her progression as a character builds. It’s an undercurrent that you really don’t feel until it’s to late. This is her fully revealed and I love it. If you just picked up reading the stories midway, this may seem out of left field. I’d urge you to look at the books from the start. (Especially now when you can get both Jetta: Crucible and Jetta: Last Chances together in a single volume in full color on comixology! Hint Hint) I’ve been planning this page for far to long. I even did a teaser image a long time ago that hinted at this page.

TADA!! This image also hints at some other things that I will confirm as well. Yes… There will be deaths. No… All of the main characters do not come out of this book alive. Yes… Dead is dead in my universe of characters. Kevin (My editor and, often, best friend when I’m not killing him off in a book) says that I kill off my characters to much. You guys should see how many times Dan (Jetta’s former love interest in the books) died before I settle on how he bought it in Defiance. HAHAH! (Maniacal Laugh) At any rate, the tradition of my head hunting continues! As evidenced here…

(Insert maniacal laugh here).

Alright, one last page for this week.

Ah yes! Omega Suit Jetta!! I’ve been wanting to reveal this one a long time as well. One of the downfalls of publishing a book like Jetta is that it has a very attractive female lead. I purposely made Jetta a busty character. At the time, when I first designed her, that was popular. Witchblade, Shi, Cyblade, even Wonder Woman had a bigger chest area. It was meant to hook the reader. Maybe even fool them into falling for the lead character and then hitting them over the head with a story with heart. What I didn’t think was that the “heart” of the story would be SO covered up by the breasts of the story. People automatically wrote the book off as T&A and we have been fighting it ever since. It has even gotten worse in today’s climate of comic book reader. I always knew that I would “cover her up” a bit more at one point or another and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do it. I am so in love with this redesign of her. It makes her look like the bad ass that she is; like she should have been seen as from the beginning. I tried to keep her standard look intact. Same color scheme and textures. But, this time, I made it look almost Terminus-like (Terminus is Jetta’s father and main nemesis in the series). There is an underlying current of mistrust among the rest of the Toshigawa clan. Most of them don’t like Jetta at all even though she’s supposed to be their savior. She broke away from the Toshigawa in the last graphic novel before she fought her father in a brutal drag out fight. Now, she shows up with a new suit that reminds everyone who her father is and what he stood for. I can’t tell you how this happens, but, trust me, it’s a good resolution to this triangular feud between the Toshigawa, Shianndrea, and Terminus.

That brings this production update to a close. What are your thoughts? How do you think the story should end? Speak people!!! I want to know!! You can reach me in the comments below or on our Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa Facebook page. Please like us on there and spread the word of ninja dominance! Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa Omnibus 1: Beginnings

Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa - Beginnings

Shianndrea Toshigawa is “The Chosen One” of the Toshigawa Ninja Clan. She is the only warrior powerful enough to save the world from the wrath of the Knave, a demonic samurai army led by her father, Terminus. Although Shianndrea longs for a normal life away from the weight of her destiny, she is hunted at every turn. Taki Sato, one of the most deadly warriors in all of Japan wants Shianndrea dead and the monstrous tracker known as Desai would like nothing more than to restore his honor by breaking Shianndrea and returning her to Terminus. Now this reluctant warrior must cope with the fear of her destiny, a battle to the death and a rumor that another clan member is traitor. Created by Martheus Wade and optioned for a motion picture, “Beginnings” will be the first in a series of Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa digital omnibus collections to be released over the next two years. “Beginnings” collects Jetta: Last Chances (first published in 2003) and Jetta: Crucible (first published in 2009) into one 120 page full color graphic novel. With all new story additions, art and ending commentary, Beginnings brings an entirely new reading experience to these exciting books and provides an excellent jumping on point for new readers who have always wanted to check out one of the most popular female characters in independent comics.

Kunoichi Hime Comes to LIFE!!

Before she got the name “Jetta” She was a young ninja on the verge of being a Master. Her journey begins at the Anime Blues Winterfest Remix!

Kunoichi Hime, the first chapter in the life of Shianndrea Toshigawa, is in full swing production and will be ready to go January 2013!! Check out the commercial by GT Media Group starring Sara Frietes as Shianndrea Toshigawa. Illustrations by Martheus Wade!

Fourteen year old Shianndrea deals with the hardships of any normal teenage girl. She’s in love with a boy who is way out of her league and dating someone else. She hates the way she looks. Her teachers are overbearing. And her rival just so happens to be a star pupil who is always willing to make her look bad. But Shianndrea is not like any  normal girl. She is a ninja princess, born into a world of martial arts training and death defying ninja action all in order to safeguard Japan from its evil Emperor. The last thing she wants is to let her clan down.

However, certain forces are moving against her. The Azumi Ninja Clan has their eyes set on capturing Shianndrea and delivering her to the Emperor who is ready to destroy her. They have conjured an Oni (Demon) to make sure that the Ninja Princess does not escape. Now Shianndrea has to stay out of the Azumi’s and their monster’s sights while navigating the trials and tribulations of a teenage girl. All of this and her Ninja Master Test is just around the corner.

“What makes this different from the Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa series?” Well, I’m glad you asked, young reader. This series will be presented initially as a web comic released biweekly. That’s right!! Tune into toshigawa.com every two weeks to see the story onfold! Another thing that sets this series apart from the graphic novels is the story. Kunoichi Hime is set 8 years before the original graphic novel series, Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa, and is about how a 14 year old Shianndrea copes with love, life, and ninja training all while trying to discover what kind of woman she wants and needs to be. “We wanted to do some stories that where a bit lighter in tone. Kunoichi Hime is a fun and exciting read that will entertain, not only current readers on the original graphic novels, but teens and girls who love comics and manga as well”, said writer Janet Wade. “I, for one, am extremely happy with the stories that Janet and Kevin have crafted. I’m looking forward to seeing where they take this next.”, said creator Martheus Wade. “It’s going to be refreshing to turn over the reigns of these characters to someone else for a change.”

Kunoichi Hime will make it’s debut at Anime Blues Con Winter Remix Saturday, January 19, 2013. We will have with us an exclusive 8 page intro story in print and on sale to kick off the web comic. Don’t miss this opportunity to get this REMIX EXCLUSIVE. We will also have prints and posters to help us celebrate this new beginning to the Toshigawa saga. Kunoichi Hime goes live at toshigawa.com on January 26! Mark your calendars and don’t forget to subscribe for frequent updates!
